Remarks

Protologue: The form (var. acutifolia) from more northern Mexico and extending into Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas, having smaller leaves (rarely 3 inches long), which are acute or rarely subacuminate, may be distinct. Watson's usage of the terms may be distinct may imply that he provisionally published this varietal name. Watson's usage, however, is interpreted here as an expression of taxonomic doubt about his taxon's distinction from the species proper, and the varietal name is accepted as validly published.
