Eaton (footnote no. 1, p. 144) referred to: cinnoides, B. -- canadensis, N. -- Arundo stricta, Sl. glauca, M. [cinnoides, B.” = Calamagrostis cinnoides W.P.C. Barton; “canadensis, N.” = Calamagrostis canadensis Nutt.; “Arundo stricta, Sl.” = Arundo stricta Spreng.; “glauca, M.” = Arundo glauca Muhl.] Furthermore, Eaton (p. 116) recognized Arundo canadensis Michx. (1803) as a distinct species. Since Arundo glauca Muhl. (1813) was invalidly published and A. stricta Spreng. (1820) is a later homonym (non Timm 1795), they do not cause illegitimacy to Calamagrostis coarctata. Likewise, C. cinnoides W. P. C. Barton (1818) and C. canadensis Nutt. (1818), which are typified by the type of A. canadensis, also do not cause illegitimacy to C. coarctata. Eaton quoted the description verbatim from Torrey and ascribed C. coarctata to Torrey; this ascription is construed here as an indirect reference to the replaced synonym Arundo coarctata Torr. (non Por. 1816); Torrey (in A. Gray, N. Amer. Gram. 1: 19. 1834) also made this nom. nov.
