L. assigned neuter gender, whereas classical usage indicates masculine. Sprengel (Pl. Min. Cogn. Pug. 2: 53. 1815; Syst. Veg. (ed. 16) 1: 900. late 1824 ('1825')) assigned masculine gender. A. R. Magee et al. (in Taxon 57(2): 617, column 2, paragraph 1. 2008) discussed the gender of this genus and followed L.
