Remarks
In Linnaeus’s Flora monspeliensis (1756), each name is accompanied by a numeral, e.g., “Mentha longifolia 771”; in 1756, such numerals were not known to refer to any effectively published description; therefore, “Mentha longifolia” was not validly published. When the 1756 work was reprinted in Linnaeus’s vol. 4 of the Amoenitates academicae (1759), an explanation was added stating that the numbers referred to earlier descriptions published in Magnol’s Botanicon monspeliense (1688, ed. 2 reissue). Although a reference to the basionym M. spicata var. longifolia L. is lacking, one may apply the ICN Art. 41.4 and accept M. longifolia (L.) L. as validly published. Some works (e.g., Linnean Typification Project) treat the name M. longifolia as a typographical error for M. spicata var. longifolia, and such a view is not accepted here
