Remarks
Linnaeus (1763) based his G. domingensis on Rhamnus domingensis Jacq. (Enum. Syst. Pl. 17. 1760); he referred to Jacquin (Jacq. amer. 17), used the same epithet (domingensis), and quoted the basionym diagnosis (Rhamnus inermis, ramis … ). Within the protologue, Linnaeus adopted the phrase name of Banisteria lupuloides L. (1753) and cited its 2 synonyms, but he did not cite the preceding name itself as a synonym; nevertheless, some works (e.g., Linnaean Typification Project) treat G. domingensis as superfluous and illegitimate under the Melbourne Code Art. 52.2. Firstly, G. domingensis was published as a new combination based on a legitimate basionym, and Art. 52.3 applies. Secondly, in 1753 B. lupuloides had no type, nor was the name B. lupuloides itself cited by Linnaeus; therefore, G domingensis is neither illegitimate nor superfluous, but is a legitimate name.
