Piper did not describe this species, but referred to the illustration of C. sitchensis sensu Boott (in Hooker, Fl. Bor.-Amer. 2: 220, t. 221 (plate with analysis). 1839; non Prescott ex Bong 1832); C. B. Clarke (Bull. Misc. Inform. Kew, Addit. Ser. 8: 711. 1908) used C. magniflca, Dewey, MS. and referred to Boott (isonym); Holm (Amer. J. Sci. ser. 4, 17: 316. 1904) used the name Carex magniflca, Dew., but did not describe or refer to a description
